Selling your motorbike privately in the UK

Before you list, get a realistic valuation by comparing similar motorbikes on X2Bikes and other UK marketplaces. Price slightly above what you'd accept so you have room to negotiate. Buyers trust detailed, honest listings — mention the service history, MOT expiry, and any faults up front.

Have your paperwork ready: the V5C logbook (registered to you at your current address), the MOT certificate, service records and any outstanding finance details. When a buyer turns up, take photos of their driving licence before a test drive, and never hand over the motorbike until payment has cleared in your bank account. When you sell, fill in the "new keeper" slip, send the V5C to the DVLA, and confirm the sale online so you're not liable for the motorbike afterwards.

Quick tips for a smooth sale

  • •Clean the motorbike inside and out — good photos can double enquiry rates.
  • •Get a fresh MOT if yours is close to expiry; it removes a buyer's biggest objection.
  • •Meet in a public place and bring a friend for viewings and test drives.
  • •Only accept cleared bank transfer or cash paid into your account — beware overpayment scams.
